What the Actionstep API (and Its Outlook Plugin) Actually Covers
Actionstep exposes an API that other systems can use to read and write matter, billing, and document data, and ships its own Outlook plugin for filing email against a matter. We don't sell or configure Actionstep. We build the integrations and automation that connect those pieces to the accounting, intake, and communication tools Actionstep doesn't replace.
What's already built in
Actionstep's API lets an outside system create or update matters, pull billing data, and work with documents without someone re-keying the same information twice. Its Outlook plugin covers a narrower job: filing an email against the right matter directly from Outlook, instead of forwarding it or saving it somewhere else first.
Both are real, useful pieces. Neither one decides what should happen next, which is where most of the actual manual work still sits.
Where that still leaves a gap
A filed email in Actionstep doesn't tell your accounting system that a milestone was hit. A new matter created through the API doesn't automatically notify the person who needs to start work on it. The API and the plugin move data correctly; connecting that to an actual next step still takes someone building it.
Where this shows up in practice
A new matter triggers the right next step automatically
A matter created through Actionstep's API, from an intake form or another system, kicks off the task or notification that should follow it, instead of waiting for someone to open Actionstep and check.
What's still manual around your Actionstep API or Outlook plugin?
A billing milestone nobody passes along, an email filed but never followed up on: tell us what it is and we'll look at what's actually possible to automate.
Using Actionstep's API or Outlook plugin but still connecting the rest by hand?
Tell us what's not talking to Actionstep right now, a billing handoff, a filed email that should trigger a follow-up, a matter that should notify someone the moment it's created. We'll look at what's realistic to build on top of what Actionstep already exposes. And if Actionstep isn't actually where the friction lives, that's fine too; we look at whatever's manual in the firm, any tool, not just this one.
