NetDocuments Files by Matter, Not by Folder. We Connect That to Everything Else.

NetDocuments is a cloud-based document and email management system built for law firms: every document gets filed by client and matter using metadata rather than a folder tree, and email gets filed the same way instead of living in someone's inbox. We don't run or configure NetDocuments itself. We build the integrations that get its matter-centric filing talking to the practice management, billing, and communication tools a firm runs alongside it.

What we build on top of NetDocuments

A matter opening in your practice management software and a workspace existing in NetDocuments are two separate facts until something connects them. We build that connection, so a new matter number and its client metadata create the right NetDocuments workspace automatically instead of someone copying the same details into a second system by hand.

The reverse direction matters just as much. When a document hits a status that means something, finalized, signed, sent for review, that event can trigger a task, a notification, or a billing entry somewhere else, instead of sitting in NetDocuments until a person happens to open it.

NetDocuments' own Outlook email-filing tool handles getting correspondence into the right matter. What it doesn't do is tell anyone outside NetDocuments that it happened. We surface that activity, document counts, filing status, recent correspondence, inside the practice management or CRM screen staff already have open, so nobody needs a NetDocuments login just to check whether something got filed.

Where NetDocuments exposes an API, that's the layer we build against: pulling workspace and document activity into firm-wide reporting, or pushing matter data in, rather than asking anyone to re-key what already exists somewhere else.

Where this shows up in practice

Matter opens, workspace follows

A new matter in your practice management system creates the matching NetDocuments workspace with the right client and matter metadata already attached, so filing starts correctly from document one.

Document status, visible outside NetDocuments

A document reaching final or signed status shows up as an update in whatever system your team actually watches, instead of requiring someone to check NetDocuments directly.

What's still manual between NetDocuments and the rest of your systems?

A billing handoff, a client intake step, a report someone builds by hand once a month: tell us what it is and we'll look at what NetDocuments' API can expose for it.

Running NetDocuments and still bridging gaps with manual re-entry?

Tell us what's not talking to NetDocuments right now, your practice management system, your billing software, a client portal you're trying to build. We'll look at what NetDocuments' own API can expose before anyone considers a workaround. And if NetDocuments isn't actually where the friction lives, that's fine too. The same question applies to anything else in the firm running on manual re-entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NetDocuments?+
A cloud-based document and email management system built for law firms and other professional services businesses. Instead of organizing files into folders, NetDocuments tags every document with metadata, client, matter, author, and lets people find it by searching that metadata rather than browsing a directory tree.
How much does NetDocuments cost?+
NetDocuments doesn't publish flat pricing. Cost depends on firm size, which modules you need (email management, security add-ons, records retention), and how you buy it, so getting an actual number means talking to NetDocuments directly or through a reseller.
Is NetDocuments any good?+
It's one of the two dominant cloud document management systems in the legal market, alongside iManage, and most reviews land on it being strong on security and search, with the usual adjustment period any firm goes through when it moves off folder-based filing. We don't sell or implement it, so we're not the ones to ask for a vendor recommendation, but we see it running cleanly at the firms we build integrations for.
Does NetDocuments have an API for integrations?+
Yes. NetDocuments exposes an API that lets other systems read and write workspace, document, and metadata information, which is the layer custom integrations (including the ones we build) are built against instead of screen-scraping or manual exports.
NetDocuments vs iManage: what's the difference?+
Both are matter-centric document management systems built for law firms, and both compete on the same ground: security, search, and getting away from folder-based filing. NetDocuments was built cloud-native from the start; iManage has a longer on-premise history with iManage Cloud as its hosted option. We don't sell or recommend either one. Whichever a firm already runs, our job is connecting it to everything around it.
