The ActiveCampaign API and Webhooks: What They Actually Cover

ActiveCampaign's REST API covers contacts, deals, automations, and custom fields, authenticated with an API URL and key found in Settings > Developer. It's well documented, which is exactly why most custom ActiveCampaign work doesn't wait on a native app-store integration to exist, it goes straight to the API.

What the API and webhooks actually let you build

The Contacts and Deals endpoints are the two most-used parts of the API in practice: creating or updating a contact, moving a deal between pipeline stages, or attaching a custom field value, all programmatically, all without a person clicking through the UI. Automations themselves can't be built or edited through the API (the logic is UI-only, same limitation most marketing-automation platforms share), but you can trigger an automation to start for a specific contact via the API, which covers most real integration needs anyway.

Webhooks run the other direction: an ActiveCampaign automation can include a Webhook action that calls an external URL, passing contact or deal data out to another system the moment something happens inside ActiveCampaign, a tag applied, a deal moved, a form submitted.

This combination, API calls in, webhooks out, is the foundation for most of what we build on top of ActiveCampaign, whether that's the deal-to-invoice automation described on the main ActiveCampaign page → or the CRM depth covered on our ActiveCampaign CRM page →.

What the API can't do

There's no API to create or edit an automation's actual logic, the trigger conditions, branches, and action steps still have to be built by a person in the UI, one automation, in one account, at a time. If you need the same automation logic replicated across multiple ActiveCampaign accounts, or rebuilt after a template update, that's a UI-only job unless you're willing to do it through browser automation instead of the API.

What that looks like built out

Deal stage moves fired from a real external event

A stock confirmation, a signed contract, or a credit check clearing in another system moves the deal automatically via the API, instead of a rep moving it on faith.

Automation logic replicated without the UI, one click at a time

Where there's no API to clone an automation's actual logic across several accounts, we do it through browser automation, doing in minutes what the UI forces a person to repeat manually.

What are you trying to build against the ActiveCampaign API right now?

Stuck wiring up the ActiveCampaign API, or copying the same automation into multiple accounts by hand?

Tell us what you're trying to connect or replicate, and we'll build it properly, through the API where that works, through browser automation where it has to. The ActiveCampaign API is one example; n-frames builds whatever integration your business actually needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find my ActiveCampaign API URL and key?+
In your account under Settings > Developer. Both the API URL (specific to your account) and the API key are shown there, and you'll need both to authenticate requests.
Can I create or edit an ActiveCampaign automation through the API?+
No. The API can trigger an existing automation to start for a contact and manage contacts, deals, and tags, but the automation's actual logic, its triggers and action steps, has to be built in the UI by a person. There's no official way around that.
Does ActiveCampaign support webhooks?+
Yes, as a native action type inside an automation. You add a Webhook step that calls an external URL with contact or deal data whenever that automation runs, which is the standard way to push ActiveCampaign events to another system in real time.
Is the ActiveCampaign API included with every plan?+
API access is included broadly, though specific endpoints and rate limits can vary by plan tier. Check your current plan's documentation for any limits relevant to a high-volume integration.
What is the ActiveCampaign Deals API used for?+
Creating, updating, and moving deals through pipeline stages programmatically, which is the foundation for most deal-side automation built on ActiveCampaign, including stage-gating logic that checks a condition in another system before letting a deal advance.
