Venmo Doesn't Have Its Own Merchant API. Braintree Is How You Actually Take Venmo Payments.
There's no standalone Venmo API a business can call directly to accept Venmo at checkout. Since PayPal owns both companies, Venmo payments get processed through Braintree's SDK instead, adding a Venmo button alongside cards and PayPal wherever Drop-in or a custom checkout already runs. We build what happens once that Venmo payment actually clears: matching it to the order, handling a Venmo-specific dispute or refund correctly, and keeping it in the same reconciled picture as every other payment method you accept.
How Venmo actually works inside a Braintree integration
Enabling Venmo isn't a separate integration from your existing Braintree setup. It's a payment method you turn on for your merchant account, and from there it shows up as its own button in Drop-in UI, or through a dedicated Venmo component if you're building a custom checkout with Hosted Fields.
A linked Venmo account gets vaulted the same way a card does, so a returning customer can check out again without re-approving the connection every time, and a subscription can keep charging against that stored Venmo account the same way it would a saved card.
Venmo used to work on mobile only, since approving a payment meant switching into the Venmo app itself. Desktop and in-app checkout both work now too, through a scannable code that opens the approval step on the customer's phone.
Where Venmo's own quirks still cause manual work
A Venmo transaction isn't identical to a card transaction once something goes wrong. Venmo disputes and how a refund gets treated can differ slightly from a card chargeback or refund, and a dispute workflow built assuming every transaction behaves like a card can let a Venmo one slip through without the right handling.
Settlement reporting lumps Venmo in with your other Braintree transactions by default, convenient for one combined number but harder to use if the business actually wants to see how much volume is coming through Venmo on its own.
What this looks like built
Venmo transactions handled on their own terms
A Venmo payment gets reconciled and, if needed, disputed using logic that actually fits how Venmo processes it, instead of running through handling that only accounts for card transactions.
Venmo volume visible on its own
Venmo transactions get tagged and reported separately from cards and direct PayPal, so a business that added Venmo to see whether customers use it can actually tell.
Added Venmo through Braintree and still treating it exactly like every other payment method?
Tell us where a Venmo transaction has actually caused a problem, a dispute, a refund, a reconciliation mismatch, and we'll look at what's worth building around it.
Taking Venmo payments through Braintree and not sure what's different about them yet?
Venmo rides on top of your existing Braintree integration, but it doesn't behave in every way like a card underneath. Tell us what you've noticed since turning it on, and if Venmo isn't actually where your real gap is, that's fine too. We build on top of whatever payment method or platform is actually running your business.
