Clio Can Generate Your Documents. Getting Them Out the Door Is the Other Half.
Clio stores every matter's documents in a searchable, matter-linked folder structure, with Clio Drive syncing that storage to your desktop like a mapped drive, and its Document Automation feature merges matter and contact data into Word templates to produce retainer agreements, letters, and routine filings in a click. We build the piece that happens after the click, so the right document goes out, to the right person, the moment your firm's own trigger condition is met, without someone deciding to run it by hand.
What Clio's document tools actually do
Every matter in Clio has its own document section, organized by folder and fully searchable across the firm, so staff aren't hunting through a shared drive or someone's inbox for the signed engagement letter from six months ago. Clio Drive mirrors that structure onto a desktop or laptop, letting staff work with Clio-stored files the same way they'd work with any local folder.
Document Automation is the template side of it: build a Word template once with merge fields tied to Clio's matter and contact data, name, case type, court, billing rate, whatever the document needs, and generating a finished copy for a specific matter becomes a matter of picking the template and clicking through, instead of retyping the same boilerplate letter for the fortieth time this month.
Where the manual work still hides
Template merge removes the retyping, but someone still has to notice it's time to generate the document and go click the button. That's fine when a paralegal is already sitting in the matter for another reason. It's a different story when the trigger is something that happens outside Clio entirely, a signed intake form, a court date getting set, a status change nobody's watching for in real time.
The merge itself runs inside Clio's own interface, and there's no public API endpoint that fires a template the instant a matter crosses a specific status. When that's the real limitation, we trigger the generation through the browser directly, replicating the same click your staff would make, the moment the condition you define is actually met, rather than waiting on an API hook Clio hasn't built for this specific action.
What we build on top of Clio document automation
Status-triggered document generation
The moment a matter hits a stage your firm defines, signed intake, demand ready, settlement reached, the matching template generates and goes out automatically, pulled straight from the matter's own data.
Signed documents routed onward without a manual export
A signed retainer or settlement document that lands in Clio also needs to reach accounting, a referring attorney, or a client portal. We build the handoff so the file moves on its own instead of someone downloading and re-sending it.
Still generating the same letter template by hand every week?
Tell us which document and which trigger, and we'll scope whether it can fire itself the moment the condition is actually met.
Running document generation through Clio but still clicking the button yourself?
Walk us through which documents your firm produces most often and what has to happen before one's needed, and we'll tell you what triggering it automatically would actually take. Document generation is one example; we automate whatever else in your firm still runs on someone remembering to click a button.
