MCP Lets an AI Agent Reach Intercom Directly, Not Just Guess From a Transcript.
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for letting an AI assistant call out to external tools and data sources in a consistent way, instead of every integration needing its own one-off setup. Intercom's support for MCP shows up two ways: Fin can use it to reach outside systems mid-conversation, and Intercom data can be exposed through an MCP connection so an external AI agent, yours or a vendor's, can read and act on it directly.
What MCP actually changes
Before MCP, connecting an AI tool to a specific system meant building a custom integration for that exact pairing, Fin to your billing system, a different AI tool to your CRM, each wired up separately. MCP standardizes that: an MCP server exposes a system's data and actions in a format any MCP-compatible AI client can call, and an MCP client (an AI agent) can connect to multiple MCP servers without custom code for each one.
For Intercom specifically, that means two directions worth paying attention to. Fin, acting as an MCP client, can reach outside systems through MCP instead of only through Custom Actions built one at a time. And Intercom conversation and contact data can be made available through an MCP connection, so a separate AI tool, an internal assistant, a different vendor's agent, can query and act on Intercom data without a bespoke integration being built first.
Where this actually matters for a business
If your business is already building or evaluating AI agents elsewhere, an internal tool, a different vendor's assistant, MCP support means connecting that agent to Intercom data doesn't require a one-off integration project the way it would have a year or two ago. And for Fin itself, MCP is one more path (alongside Custom Actions) for getting it real data from systems it doesn't natively know about.
The part that still takes real work is making sure the data exposed through MCP is actually the right data, scoped correctly, and that whatever's on the other end of the connection is handling it the way your business needs. The protocol standardizes how the connection happens. It doesn't design the connection's logic for you.
What we build around Intercom and MCP
An internal AI assistant that can actually see support data
If your business runs its own AI tool for account teams or leadership, we connect it to Intercom through MCP so it can answer questions grounded in real conversation and account data, not a static export.
MCP as one more path into Fin, alongside Custom Actions
Where MCP is the cleaner fit for a given system, we build that connection instead of defaulting to a Custom Action just because it's the more familiar pattern.
Already building an AI agent that needs to see your support data?
Tell us what it needs to know and act on, and we'll scope whether MCP, a Custom Action, or a direct API connection is the right way to get it there.
Trying to connect an AI agent to Intercom and not sure MCP is the right tool for it?
Tell us what the agent needs to see and do, and which system it's actually running in. We'll tell you plainly whether MCP is the right fit or whether a more direct API connection gets you there faster. And if the automation that actually matters most in your business doesn't involve AI at all, we build that too.
