How to Change Your Home Currency in QuickBooks Online (Before You Can't)
Go to the gear icon, then Account and Settings > Advanced, find Currency, and edit your Home Currency. That part takes thirty seconds. The catch: QuickBooks only lets you do this once, and only before a single transaction exists in the company. Once you've saved anything, the field locks for good.
The full walkthrough
1. Head into your company settings. Click the gear icon in the top right, then Account and Settings.
2. Go to the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the Currency section.
3. Click the pencil icon next to Home Currency. QuickBooks will warn you here if you've already entered any transactions, that warning is your signal this isn't going to work.
4. Select the correct currency from the dropdown. This becomes the currency every report, invoice, and balance in the company defaults to.
5. Save. If you're still inside the no-transactions window, the change applies immediately across the whole company.
Why this one setting is so unforgiving
QuickBooks treats home currency as foundational, every report, every balance, every historical number assumes it from the start. Letting someone change it after transactions exist would mean retroactively reinterpreting everything already on the books, so Intuit just blocks the change outright instead of trying to convert it after the fact.
If a company's already set up wrong with real transactions in it, there's no in-place fix. The honest answer is a new company file with the correct home currency, followed by migrating or re-entering the chart of accounts, customers, vendors, and open balances into it, which is tedious but reliable.
What we've built on top of QuickBooks multi-currency setups
Clean migrations when the currency has to be rebuilt
When a business is stuck with the wrong home currency, the chart of accounts, customers, vendors, and open balances get pulled out and rebuilt in a correctly configured company automatically, instead of someone re-keying all of it by hand.
Exchange rate checks on top of multicurrency
Once multicurrency's turned on, transactions where the day's real exchange rate differs meaningfully from what QuickBooks pulled in get flagged for a person to double-check, instead of quietly going through at whatever rate QuickBooks happened to grab.
