Hiring a Ruby Developer? The Spec Isn't the Point. The Outcome Is.

Almost anyone who knows Ruby can write the code you describe. The harder question is whether what you described actually fixes the problem. That gap, between "built to spec" and "solved the problem", is what separates a developer from a partner who owns the outcome.

What you're really hiring for

Most Ruby work doesn't start as "write this method." It starts as a process that's slowing someone down, and fixing it takes someone who'll own the whole problem, not just the ticket they were handed.

We build the same way regardless of stack: you tell us what's actually slowing you down, we tell you what's realistic, and if the first idea for fixing it isn't the right one, that's on us to catch, Rails application or not.

A developer vs. a partner who owns the outcome

01

What you hand them

A developer works from the ticket you wrote. We ask what the ticket is actually trying to fix, because the two aren't always the same thing.

A spec to execute.A problem to solve.
02

What happens when the spec was wrong

A developer paid by the ticket builds exactly what it says, even if it won't fix the real problem. We're accountable for whether the actual problem gets solved, not just whether the code runs.

Built to spec, problem still there.Accountable for the result.
03

What's left after it ships

Code that works today but that nobody owns if it breaks or the business changes, versus a team that's still accountable for it after launch.

Shipped, then forgotten.Owned past launch.

If what you need is genuinely small and well-defined, a freelancer might be the faster call, and we'll say so honestly. Most Ruby work that comes to us touches more than one system, which is exactly where having a team that doesn't vanish matters more than the hourly rate.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between hiring "a developer" and hiring an outcome-focused partner?

A developer, freelance or otherwise, often works from the spec you hand them, and builds exactly that even if it doesn't fix the real problem. We're accountable for whether the problem itself actually gets solved, which sometimes means telling you the original spec needs to change.

What if my project is small and well-defined?

Tell us what it is. If it's genuinely small, we'll say so, and a straightforward build is a straightforward build. Most of what comes to us turns out to be bigger than the original ask.

Is this Ruby on Rails, or Ruby more generally?

Either. Rails is the most common way Ruby shows up in business software, but the same hiring question applies whatever the framework. Tell us what you're running.

Is the quote really free with no obligation?

Yes. Tell us what you need, we'll tell you what it takes and what it costs. You decide from there, whether that's us, a freelancer, or someone else.
