Plaid + Stripe

Plaid Links the Account. Stripe Moves the Money. Here's When You Actually Need Both.

A common pattern uses Plaid Link to connect and verify a customer's bank account, then passes that verified account information to Stripe to charge it via ACH debit instead of a card. Stripe has since built its own bank-linking feature, Financial Connections, which covers some of the same verification ground without needing Plaid at all. We build the actual flow, whichever combination fits what your business needs it to verify.

Why Plaid and Stripe get paired in the first place

Stripe can charge a bank account via ACH debit, but it needs a verified account and routing number first, the same thing Plaid's Auth product returns after a user links their bank through Plaid Link. Chaining the two together, verify with Plaid, charge with Stripe, has been a standard pattern for exactly that reason.

It's not the only path anymore. Stripe's own Financial Connections product lets a customer link their bank account directly within Stripe's flow, covering some of the same account-verification use case without Plaid in the stack at all, for a business that's exclusively on Stripe for payments.

Where Plaid still earns its place next to Stripe

If what you need is broader than Stripe covers on its own, income verification, transaction history, identity checks, or you're not using Stripe as your only payment processor, Plaid's wider set of products still fills a gap Financial Connections wasn't built to cover. The decision isn't "Plaid or Stripe"; it's whether Stripe's narrower bank-linking feature already does the one specific thing you need, or whether your use case needs more than that.

What We Build Across Plaid and Stripe

A verify-then-charge flow that catches a bad account early

We build the handoff from Plaid's verification to a Stripe ACH charge, so a mismatched or invalid account gets caught before the charge attempt instead of after it fails and has to be chased down.

A clear read on whether you actually need Plaid at all

For a business that's Stripe-only, we look at whether Financial Connections already covers the verification you need, instead of defaulting to a second vendor out of habit.

Running Plaid and Stripe together, or deciding if you need both?

The right combination depends on exactly what you're verifying and whether Stripe's own tools already cover it. Tell us what you're building, and we'll build the flow, or tell you honestly that you don't need a second vendor for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Plaid and Stripe get used together?+
Plaid's Auth product verifies a bank account and returns its routing and account number, which is exactly what Stripe needs before it can charge that account via ACH debit. The two are commonly chained together for that reason, verify with Plaid, charge with Stripe.
Do I still need Plaid if I use Stripe's Financial Connections?+
Not always. Financial Connections lets a customer link their bank account directly within Stripe and covers some of the same verification need. If your use case is narrow and you're exclusively on Stripe for payments, it may cover it without Plaid. If you need broader data, income verification, transaction history, identity checks, or you're not Stripe-only, Plaid's wider product set still fills a gap Financial Connections wasn't built for.
Does Plaid charge separately from Stripe?+
Yes. Plaid and Stripe bill independently of each other, Plaid per API call or connected account depending on the product, Stripe on its own processing and ACH rates, so using both means tracking two separate costs rather than one combined fee.
