How to Run a Profit and Loss Statement in Wave (and Stop Generating It By Hand)
In Wave, go to Reports, select Profit and Loss, and set the date range you need, the current month, quarter, or a custom period. Wave builds the report instantly from your existing transactions, and from there you can export it as a PDF or CSV. Here's the full process, and what it looks like once that report shows up automatically instead of someone remembering to generate it.
The full walkthrough
1. Open Reports from the left navigation. Wave groups its financial reports together under one menu.
2. Select Profit and Loss. Also sometimes called an income statement, this is the report that shows revenue, expenses, and net income over a period.
3. Set the date range. Choose a preset like this month or this quarter, or pick a custom start and end date for anything else, year-to-date, a specific fiscal period, a comparison to the prior year.
4. Review the breakdown. Wave shows revenue and expenses grouped by category, with the net total at the bottom, pulled directly from your categorized transactions.
5. Export it. Download as a PDF to send to a lender, investor, or your accountant, or export as a CSV if you need to work with the numbers somewhere else.
Where this gets repetitive
A one-off P&L for a loan application is a five-minute task. A monthly or quarterly report that needs to go to a business partner, an investor, or an accountant on a recurring schedule is a different story, it's the same five minutes, every period, forever, until someone forgets a month and has to explain the gap later.
It doesn't have to be a recurring manual task. Wave's report can generate and land in the right inbox on a schedule, or get pulled automatically into a dashboard or spreadsheet a business already uses for tracking performance, without anyone logging into Wave to run it.
What we've built on top of Wave's reporting
P&L delivered on a schedule, not a reminder
A profit and loss statement for the prior month generates and emails itself to a partner, investor, or accountant automatically on the first of every month, with nobody logging into Wave to run it.
Financial data flowing into a dashboard automatically
Revenue and expense totals from Wave feed into a spreadsheet or BI dashboard a business already uses for tracking performance, kept current without a manual export every time someone wants an updated view.
Who needs your numbers, and how often?
An investor update, a monthly partner report, a lender covenant check: name who's on your list and we'll take a look at putting it on autopilot.
Still generating the same report by hand every month?
A P&L you run once for a loan application is a non-issue. The same report, every month, to the same partner or investor, is where it gets old. Tell us who's on your distribution list and how often, and we'll look at having Wave hand it to them without you in the loop. And if reporting isn't your actual bottleneck, that's fine too, n-frames automates whatever's repetitive in a small business, Wave or anywhere else.
