What Is Wix Velo, and What Can You Actually Build With It?

Velo is Wix's own development platform: real JavaScript, front-end and back-end, running inside your Wix site. It adds database collections, serverless functions, and calls out to outside APIs, which is a different thing entirely from the drag-and-drop editor or the App Market connectors. It's also the tool we reach for when a Wix store needs automation the App Market doesn't offer, and it's a genuinely capable platform, not a workaround.

What Velo actually gives you

Turn on Dev Mode and every page gets an attached code panel. You write real JavaScript against page elements on the front end, and separate backend .jsw files that run server-side with their own permissions, the same split you'd expect from any web app.

Wix Data is the built-in database: collections you query and write to from your own code, not just the content you enter through Wix's forms. Combine that with Velo's HTTP functions and you've got a place to receive webhooks from other systems, not just send data out.

The wix-fetch module lets backend code call any external API with an HTTP request. That's the door into QuickBooks, a CRM, a shipping carrier, or anything else with a REST API, all from inside the Wix site itself rather than a separate server.

Where most Wix stores stop before they get here

App Market connectors cover the common, simple cases well, and they're the right first move for a basic sync. The trouble starts once your process has a condition the connector wasn't built for: a product that needs manager approval before it ships, tax handling that differs by state, inventory that lives somewhere Wix has never heard of.

Writing that logic in Velo means it lives inside Wix itself, triggered by the site's own events (an order placed, a form submitted, a cart abandoned) instead of a separate script polling for changes every few minutes.

Once in a while a business needs Wix to do something that isn't exposed through Velo's own APIs at all, a setting buried in a dashboard panel with no corresponding endpoint. For that narrow case, we fall back to headless-browser automation that drives the Wix dashboard directly. Same end result, different route to get there.

What this usually looks like

Custom order logic Wix wasn't built to run

A Velo backend function checks each order against your own approval rules, tax treatment, or inventory source before it's marked ready to ship, something no App Market connector handles out of the box.

Webhooks in, not just data out

Velo's HTTP functions let another system, your accounting software, a shipping carrier, a CRM, push updates straight into your Wix site the moment something changes, instead of Wix only ever being the one sending data.

What's your store trying to do that Wix's connectors can't?

Tell us the specific rule or exception your process needs. That's usually exactly the kind of thing Velo is built to handle.

Already have a Wix developer, or thinking about hiring one?

Velo makes a lot possible without leaving Wix, but knowing which business logic belongs inside it versus in a separate system takes someone who's built that split before. Walk us through what you're trying to automate and where it's stuck, and Wix won't be the only tool on the table by the end of the conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wix Velo free to use?+
Velo itself doesn't cost extra to turn on; it's a feature of Wix's own editor. You do need a Wix plan that supports apps and a database, which most paid plans do, and anything Velo code calls outside Wix, a paid API, a third-party service, carries whatever cost that service charges on its own.
Do I need to hire a developer to use Velo?+
For simple tweaks, no; Wix's own tutorials cover a lot of ground. For anything with real business logic behind it, conditional order handling, syncing with outside systems, reliable error handling when an API call fails, yes, that's genuine development work and worth treating as such rather than a weekend project.
What programming language does Wix Velo use?+
JavaScript, on both the front end and the back end, which is the same language most web developers already know. Wix provides its own SDK on top of standard JavaScript for talking to Wix Data, site elements, and its APIs.
Can Velo connect to systems outside Wix?+
Yes. Velo's backend code can call any external API over HTTP and can also receive incoming requests through its own HTTP functions, so data can flow both directions between your Wix site and whatever else your business runs.
