Braintree Marketplace Splits One Payment Several Ways. We Build What Happens After.

Braintree Marketplace lets a platform business accept a single payment from a customer and automatically split it across multiple sub-merchants or funding recipients, think a platform connecting buyers to many independent sellers, handling the onboarding of those recipients and the actual fund transfer underneath. We build the reporting and reconciliation that sits on top of that split, so each recipient's payout history is actually auditable and their onboarding status doesn't just live inside Braintree's own dashboard.

What Braintree Marketplace actually handles

Marketplace covers sub-merchant onboarding (collecting the identity and bank details each recipient needs on file), the rules for splitting a single transaction's funds across however many parties are involved, and the payout scheduling and transfer mechanics underneath it. Braintree handles the compliance load that comes with moving money to a third party, so the platform running it doesn't have to build that machinery from scratch.

Where the gap shows up for the platform running it

Each sub-merchant wants a clear answer to "what did I get paid and when," but Braintree's own reporting is built around the Marketplace account as a whole, not formatted to hand a seller-facing statement to each individual recipient. Onboarding status (approved, pending, needs more information) usually has to be checked and chased by someone on the platform's side, and some of that detail isn't fully exposed through Braintree's own API.

Where a setting or a status detail like that doesn't come through the API at all, we drive Braintree's own dashboard directly to pull it, the same headless-browser approach we use anywhere a tool makes a piece of information UI-only instead of handing it over cleanly.

What this looks like built

A payout statement each seller can actually read

Every sub-merchant gets an assembled statement of what they were paid, when, and from which transactions, instead of being told to check their bank deposit against a Braintree export by hand.

Stuck onboarding gets flagged, not discovered

When a sub-merchant's verification stalls, whoever manages that relationship gets notified with enough detail to actually help resolve it, instead of the recipient just wondering why their payouts haven't started yet.

Running a marketplace model through Braintree and still tracking who got paid what by hand?

Tell us where the manual step actually is, statements, onboarding status, reconciling a split against your own records. Starting with whichever one costs the most time usually makes sense.

Splitting payouts through Braintree and still doing the accounting for it manually?

Marketplace handles the split and the transfer. What happens around that, statements, status tracking, reconciliation, is usually still a manual job until someone builds it. Tell us what that looks like on your end, and if it's not Braintree causing the friction, that's fine too; we automate whatever's actually manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Braintree Marketplace and a regular Braintree account?+
A regular Braintree account processes payments for one merchant. Marketplace is built for platforms that need to split a single transaction's funds across multiple sub-merchants or recipients, handling their onboarding and payouts underneath it.
Who handles compliance for the sub-merchants, Braintree or us?+
Braintree's Marketplace product handles the underlying compliance and fund-transfer mechanics for each sub-merchant. The platform still owns the actual relationship, deciding who gets onboarded and managing what happens if something goes wrong on their end.
Does Braintree Marketplace work the same way as a payout feature for a gig or rental platform?+
Conceptually yes, it's built for the same general pattern: one customer payment, split and paid out to multiple independent recipients on the other side.
Does Marketplace affect how Braintree's vault or subscriptions work for the buyer?+
No. Marketplace sits on top of the same core Braintree processing, so standard features like vaulted payment methods still work the normal way on the buyer's side of the transaction.
