Odoo's own apps share one database, so accounting, inventory, and CRM talk to each other without any integration work at all. Connecting Odoo to a tool outside its own app store, a different ERP, an e-commerce platform it doesn't already cover, a piece of middleware, almost always means building against Odoo's external API directly, since official connectors only exist for a limited set of major platforms.
A handful of big-name platforms have genuine Odoo apps or modules maintained either by Odoo or a partner, Shopify being a common example for e-commerce. No-code tools like Make, formerly Integromat, also offer an Odoo connector that handles simple trigger-and-action workflows reasonably well. Odoo also ships its own built-in automation engine, Automated Actions, for rules that trigger entirely inside Odoo's own data, which solves a different problem than reaching an outside tool.
Past that, coverage thins out fast. SAP, BigQuery, industry-specific tools, and most smaller platforms have no official Odoo connector at all. For those, and for Make-style automations that outgrow simple triggers as volume or logic gets more complex, the sync has to be built directly against Odoo's own API.

Not natively. Both platforms have their own APIs, but there's no official Odoo-to-SAP connector, so businesses running both typically need a custom-built integration, common during a phased migration off SAP onto Odoo or when the two are meant to run side by side long-term.
Make, formerly Integromat, has an Odoo connector that works well for simple, lower-volume automations, moving a record from one app to Odoo when something happens, for example. Once the workflow needs more complex logic or has to handle real volume reliably, it usually makes more sense to build directly against Odoo's API.
