What Version of QuickBooks Do I Have?

In QuickBooks Desktop, press F2 (or Ctrl+1) to open the Product Information window, which shows the exact product, year, and release you're running. QuickBooks Online doesn't have a version number at all, since it's one continuously updated platform; what you have there is a subscription plan tier, visible under Settings > Account and Settings.

The full walkthrough

1. On QuickBooks Desktop, press F2. This opens the Product Information window immediately, no menu navigation required, and it works even if the file is struggling to open normally.

2. Read the top line. It lists the exact product name and year (for example, "QuickBooks Pro 2026") along with the specific release number (an R followed by a number), which matters if you're troubleshooting an issue tied to one particular release.

3. Scroll down for license and file details. The same window shows your license number and the file's internal version, both of which a support agent will usually ask for if you end up calling in.

4. Prefer a menu instead of a shortcut? Use Help, then About QuickBooks. It opens a splash screen that shows the same product and release information, though F2 gets you there faster and with more detail.

5. QuickBooks Online has no version number to find. There's no yearly release to check, since every account runs on the same continuously updated platform rather than separate installed versions.

6. In Online, check your plan under Settings, then Account and Settings. The Billing & Subscription tab shows your current tier, Simple Start, Essentials, Plus, or Advanced, along with your next renewal date.

Why this question trips people up

Most of the confusion comes from QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online using completely different mental models for the same word. Desktop has real, discrete yearly versions with their own release cycle and eventual end-of-life date; Online doesn't, which means a support article written for one often doesn't apply to the other even when both products answer to the name "QuickBooks."

It gets harder again for anyone managing more than one install, a bookkeeper with several clients on Desktop, or a business running the software across multiple machines. Checking F2 on one computer tells you nothing about the other four, and an outdated release on just one of them can quietly cause compatibility issues nobody catches until something fails during a busy week.

What we've built on top of QuickBooks version tracking

Outdated releases flagged across every machine

For a business running QuickBooks Desktop on several computers, installed release numbers get checked against the current one and flagged automatically, instead of someone opening F2 on each machine by hand.

One view of every client plan and renewal date

For a practice managing several QuickBooks Online company files, subscription tiers and renewal dates get pulled into a single view instead of logging into each account separately to check.

Losing time checking QuickBooks versions by hand across machines or clients?

Tell us how many installs or accounts you're juggling and what you actually need to know about each one. We'll tell you if that check can happen automatically instead of one F2 press at a time. And version checks are a small example; anything else you're confirming by hand across systems is worth the same question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which version of QuickBooks do I need?+
That depends on what you need the software to do, not on finding out what you currently have. In general: QuickBooks Online suits a business that wants access from anywhere and automatic updates, while QuickBooks Desktop suits one that wants everything running locally, often for industry-specific or heavier accounting needs. Within either, the right tier or edition comes down to user count and the specific features you actually use day to day.
How many versions of QuickBooks are there?+
More than most people expect. Desktop alone has Pro, Premier, and Enterprise, each released as a new year's version annually, plus industry-specific Premier editions. Online has its own separate tier ladder (Simple Start, Essentials, Plus, Advanced) that doesn't map directly onto Desktop's naming at all.
What is QuickBooks Accountant version?+
It's a Desktop edition built for accounting professionals managing multiple clients' files, not a tier of QuickBooks Online. It includes tools regular Desktop editions don't, like batch-processing changes across several company files and a dedicated client data review feature.
How can I tell what version a QuickBooks file was created in, without opening it in that version?+
If you can open the file at all, F2 still works regardless of which version created it originally, since Product Information reports the file's current version, not just the one it started as. If the file won't open in your installed version, that mismatch is usually the reason, and you'll need the matching or a newer version installed to open it at all.
