Gusto publishes a developer API and documentation for reading and writing payroll, employee, and HR data, built mainly for Gusto Embedded, its partner program for software platforms that embed payroll directly into their own product. For everyone else, that API is the raw material, not a finished integration: turning it into a working sync between Gusto and your scheduling tool, HRIS, or Slack workspace is the part we build.
A handful of major platforms have a native, pre-built connection with Gusto that you turn on from a settings page. Most tools don't. If your business tracks hours in a scheduling app, keeps employee records in a separate HRIS like BambooHR, or wants new-hire data reaching Slack and your project tools automatically, none of that exists out of the box.
That gap is where Gusto's API comes in: reading employee, job, and payroll data out of Gusto, or writing time and new-hire data into it, through code instead of a screen. Where a tool on the other end has no API of its own, an older scheduling system, a vendor portal that's UI-only, we build the connection through browser automation instead, since Gusto's side being API-accessible doesn't help much if the other half of the sync isn't.
Gusto handles time tracking for hourly staff reasonably well on its own, but plenty of businesses run a separate scheduling tool for shift planning. We sync hours from that tool into Gusto automatically ahead of each pay run, so nobody's exporting a spreadsheet and reconciling it by hand the night before payroll.
When HR records live in BambooHR but payroll runs through Gusto, the two need to agree on who's employed, at what pay rate, as of when. We build the sync that keeps both systems current automatically instead of someone updating each one separately and hoping they match.

There's no official Gusto-to-Slack connector. What businesses usually want, a Slack message when someone's hired, when time off is approved, when a pay run completes, is buildable through Gusto's API and Slack's own API, just not something you turn on from a settings menu in either tool.
