Insightly's API Reaches Further Than AppConnect Does

Insightly's REST API gives you direct read-and-write access to Leads, Contacts, Organizations, Opportunities, Projects, Tasks, and any custom objects or fields you've built, authenticated with an API key from your own account. It's the same data AppConnect and the Insightly app both use, just available to any system you build yourself. Most Insightly accounts have never generated a key, let alone called it.

What's actually available through the API

Insightly's API covers the same core objects the app is built around: Leads, Contacts, Organizations, and Opportunities on the sales side, plus the Projects module that makes Insightly different from a plain pipeline tool, along with Tasks, Events, and whatever custom objects or fields your account has set up. You can create and update records the same way a user would through the interface, just from code instead of a browser.

Where it earns its keep for automation is custom fields and custom objects: if you've built something specific to how your business tracks a deal or a project, the API reads and writes that same custom data, not just the fields Insightly ships with by default.

The gaps show up around bulk operations, some reporting views, and anything tied specifically to an AppConnect workflow rather than the underlying record. When a workflow needs something the API genuinely doesn't expose, we build it against the interface directly rather than waiting on an endpoint that may never ship.

What We Build on Insightly's API

Carry custom fields somewhere Insightly can't reach on its own

Project and opportunity custom data pushed into accounting, reporting, or ops tools automatically, instead of staying trapped in a field only Insightly users ever see.

Catch a change the moment it happens

AppConnect can fire its own triggers for the cases it supports. Where that's not flexible enough, we build the API logic that reacts to a record change in near real time instead of running on a nightly batch.

What part of Insightly still means exporting data by hand?

That's usually the clearest sign there's an API-level fix available. Tell us what it is.

Running Insightly and still bridging it to everything else by hand?

Tell us what's supposed to move between Insightly and the rest of your stack, a custom field, a project milestone, a contact record, anything. We'll build it against the API where that gets us there, and against the interface itself where it doesn't. Insightly's the example here, not the limit of what we'll connect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find Insightly's API documentation?+
From your account's API settings page, which links out to Insightly's current developer documentation and where you generate your own API key.
Do I need Insightly's AppConnect to use the API?+
No, they're separate. AppConnect is a no-code workflow tool built on top of the same data the API exposes; you can use the API directly without ever touching AppConnect.
Does Insightly's API support custom fields and custom objects?+
Yes. Any custom field or custom object you've built in your own Insightly account is readable and writable through the API, not just Insightly's standard fields.
Is API access included on every Insightly plan?+
Insightly changes its plan structure periodically, so check its current pricing page for which tier includes full API access before assuming your plan has it.
