Adyen Can Keep a Card on File Working. Whether It Does Depends on What You've Turned On.
Adyen supports recurring and tokenized payments by storing a reference to a customer's payment method, with their consent, instead of the raw card number, so a later charge can run without them re-entering anything. Its account updater service can also automatically refresh a stored card's number or expiry when the issuing bank reissues it, cutting down on renewals that fail for no reason other than an expired card. We build what happens around those two features: routing a renewal that still fails somewhere useful, and keeping subscription status in sync wherever else it's actually tracked.
What Adyen actually automates on its own
Tokenized, consented storage of a payment method for later use, account updater catching a reissued or expired card before a renewal even tries to run against it, and retry logic for an attempt that genuinely gets declined.
Where it still needs something built around it
Account updater reduces failures caused by an outdated card, but it doesn't eliminate every reason a renewal might fail, insufficient funds, a card reported lost, a bank's own fraud flag. When a renewal does fail for one of those real reasons, Adyen's own system doesn't decide whether that means pausing a subscription, alerting a success rep, or just quietly retrying again. That decision, and the action it triggers, has to be built, usually connecting back to whatever system actually tracks the subscription.
What this looks like built
A failed renewal gets routed, not just retried
When a recurring charge fails for a reason account updater can't fix, the subscription record and whoever owns that account get flagged automatically, instead of the failure sitting as an unprocessed transaction nobody's watching.
One subscription status, everywhere it's tracked
A renewal's outcome updates the CRM or the product's own access controls at the same moment it updates Adyen's record, so support isn't working from a different idea of the account's status than what Adyen actually shows.
Running recurring charges through Adyen and still finding out about failed renewals after the fact?
Tell us how you currently find out a renewal failed, and what's supposed to happen next. That gap is usually the easiest place to start.
Keeping cards on file through Adyen and still chasing failed renewals manually?
Account updater handles the expired-card case quietly. Everything else that can go wrong with a renewal still needs a decision built around it. Tell us what happens today when a charge fails, and if recurring billing isn't actually your bottleneck, that's fine too; we automate whatever's manual.
